German authorities successfully thwarted a potential terror attack at a Christmas market in Bavaria following a tip-off from a foreign intelligence service.
The suspect, a 37-year-old Iraqi national, was apprehended on Wednesday evening at a shared housing facility for asylum-seekers in Augsburg, according to a report by the German newspaper Welt. A spokesperson for the Bavarian police confirmed the arrest on Friday morning.
Welt, a sister outlet of POLITICO under the Axel Springer Group, reported that the individual had posted content on social media praising Islamic State (IS) and had taken photos of the Augsburg Christmas market. Additionally, the suspect reportedly spoke about his intention to carry out an attack by driving a car through the market, the newspaper said.
