Didier Reynders, a former European Commissioner and Belgian minister, was previously under scrutiny in 2019 for allegations of corruption and money laundering. While he consistently asserted his innocence, the charges were ultimately dropped by prosecutors. During his five-year term as a European Commissioner, Reynders benefitted from a form of diplomatic immunity.
A spokesperson for the European Commission has acknowledged awareness of the ongoing investigation, expressing a willingness to cooperate with Belgian authorities if approached.
“We have, of course, seen the media reports about a case involving former Commissioner and former minister, Didier Reynders. We do not have any further information on this matter,” the spokesperson stated. “If the Belgian authorities were to contact us, we are going to collaborate with them.”
