Romania's Presidential Election Annulled Amid Russian Influence Allegations

BUCHAREST — Romania’s Constitutional Court has invalidated the results of the country’s presidential election following concerns from national security services about extensive interference by Russian influence campaigns aimed at favoring a far-right candidate.

Călin Georgescu, an ultranationalist independent contender, surged unexpectedly in the polls two weeks ago and secured victory in the first round of voting. However, intelligence reports revealed that his success was significantly bolstered by a TikTok-driven campaign resembling Kremlin-led influence operations previously identified in countries like Ukraine and Moldova, according to declassified Romanian intelligence documents.

On Friday, the Constitutional Court responded to several formal requests and issued a statement declaring the entire electoral process for the Romanian presidency null and void.

As a result, the statement confirmed that the second-round runoff, which had been scheduled for Sunday, would no longer proceed.
