Ghent (Eurotoday): Two Dutch men, aged 25 and 27, were sentenced to 4 and 2 years in prison for not helping 53-year-old Hakim Mutyaba, who drowned in Ghent on July 17, 2022. One man pushed him into the water. They must pay €60,000 to Mutyaba’s family.
In Ghent, two Dutch men were convicted for the drowning death of Hakim Mutyaba. The judge said they saw that he couldn’t swim but did nothing to help. One of the men was also found guilty of pushing Mutyaba into the water, leading to a heavier sentence. The incident occurred after a night of festivities on July 17, 2022, when both men were under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Why were two men sentenced for failing to help Hakim Mutyaba?
Two men, aged 27 and 25, were sentenced to 4 and 2 years in prison for not helping Hakim Mutyaba when he was drowning. They just watched and walked away. The case went to a criminal court, while the victim’s family wanted tougher punishments.
According to Ercan Tok, the lawyer for Hakim Mutyaba’s brother, it’s hard to understand why people save pets but these men did nothing to help a person in need. The judge ruled that the men must pay nearly 60,000 euros in damages, considering their young age and lack of a criminal record. One of the men had a difficult childhood and drug problems, which also influenced the decision.
