Brussels (Eurotoday) – The EU Council approved 46 flagship projects for 2025 under Global Gateway, focusing on digital, climate, energy, transport, health, education, and research.
The European Council has approved 46 Global Gateway flagship projects for 2025. The projects recognised as flagships by EU member states’ ambassadors are notable examples of Global Gateway deliverables in the scopes of digital, climate and energy, transport, health, education and research.
As reported by the EU Council, this preference for key initiatives allows to showcase the comprehensive support the EU and its member states present to partners across the globe in terms of the sectors of actions, as well as the countries and regions involved. The flagship projects assist in strengthening strategic collaborations and the advancement of joint interests. Each scheme is scheduled to perform a tangible deliverable and milestone during 2025.
What is the significance of the flagship projects?
Generally, Flagship projects are determined every year and integrated into a Global Gateway flagships list which contains 218 initiatives from previous years, in this case, 2023 and 2024. The flagship list is not exhaustive regarding all projects and activities under Global Gateway but seeks to serve as an instrument for the EU and its member states for strategic communication and visibility during the year 2025 in the EU’s arrangement with its partners. Flagship projects showcase substantial transformative projects and highlight their tangible impact and benefits to local communities.
Moreover, the selection is conducted in line with the Global Gateway governance and taking into account the input from the EU Commission, the EEAS and the member states. Once a scheme is included in the list, it remains a flagship project until its fulfilment. To back the continued accuracy and applicability of the list, a reexamination procedure has been introduced to permit streamlining projects identified as flagships in 2023 and 2024.
