Haasdonk is getting a new balloon launch site after a request from vzw Waasbalion, a group for balloonists in the Waasland area. Alderman Peter Buysrogge (N-VA) explained that this new site will help meet the needs of local balloonists who want more launch locations. By adding the new site, the city hopes to spread out ballooning activities and create a better experience for everyone who loves the sport.
Geert Ivens from vzw Waasballon explained that hot air balloons follow the wind, which can cause problems near Antwerp airport. When the wind comes from the east, it’s tough to take off from Sinaai because balloons get pushed toward the Ghent-Terneuzen canal zone. The new launch site, east of Sint-Niklaas, will help balloonists avoid these issues and let them fly over Sint-Niklaas before going into Waasland. The opening date for the new site is not known yet.
