Costa Commemorates Restoration of Independence in a Symbolic Ceremony in Kyiv

Kiev – António Costa, the President of the European Council, highlighted Portugal’s Restoration of Independence—celebrated today—as he voiced support for Ukraine’s sovereignty in Kiev. This visit marks a “symbolic beginning” of his presidency, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Being here today in Ukraine, on this significant date, holds special meaning for me. On December 1st, my country has celebrated Independence Day for nearly 400 years, affirming our national sovereignty, self-determination, and the need to respect territorial integrity and borders,” stated Costa.
At a press conference held at the Mariinsky Palace alongside President Zelensky, Costa emphasized that “Ukraine, like my country and nations around the world, possesses the same rights.”
On his first day in office as President of the European Council, Costa reiterated the importance of respecting Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During the conference, Zelensky characterized this visit as a “symbolic beginning” for a new phase in EU leadership. Costa arrived in Kiev early this morning, joined by the head of EU diplomacy, to reinforce support for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
At approximately 08:00 local time (two hours earlier in Lisbon), Costa arrived with a delegation that included Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, both of whom are also starting their new roles today.
