The institute cautioned that the pills contain a very high level of para-methoxymethamphetamine, or PMMA.
Despite its close resemblance to MDMA — the active ingredient in ecstasy pills used by some clubgoers in the 1980s and 1990s — PMMA is substantially more hazardous, the institute advised.
Symptoms such as nausea, increased heart rate, convulsions, and a dramatically elevated body temperature may “suddenly occur” hours after PMMA consumption, it stated. Ingesting the pill could lead to “overheating with potentially fatal consequences,” though a spokesperson informed the Associated Press that no deaths or serious illnesses among potential users have been reported yet.
Trump is famously abstinent and referred to cocaine as “down and dirty” in an interview with podcaster Theo Von before the 2024 election. Recently, the White House launched a drug control strategy.
