Fedorov, after being ousted from his governmental position during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent reshuffle, advocated for wartime elections. He emphasized that he is not relocating to Rome, stating, “My main focus remains unchanged,” and mentioned his ongoing work in Ukraine to bolster defense and bring in international resources.
In July, Crosetto extended an offer for Fedorov to work as an adviser, contacting him a day after his dismissal and asking, “When would you like to come to Rome to work with me as an adviser?” He commended Fedorov as an innovator who had transformed battlefield tactics.
The former minister was dismissed in mid-July after about six months leading Ukraine’s defense sector, amidst strains with military leaders and policy disagreements. His dismissal incited unusual wartime protests.
He has since intensified his critique of President Zelenskyy, calling for elections this month despite Russia’s invasion, cautioning that Ukrainians “cannot endlessly live” without knowing decision-making processes.
Zelenskyy dismissed the proposal, warning that elections during wartime could “destroy” the country.
