Following reports from Reuters, Haaretz, and Libération, France Unbowed lawmaker François Piquemal, who made it to the Toulouse mayoral runoff but was defeated in the second round, has been identified as a target.
These allegations arise after Slovenian law enforcement earlier this year accused an Israeli private intelligence firm of aiding in leaking recordings intended to sway the Slovenian election in March.
POLITICO’s request for comment from the Israeli Embassy in Paris went unanswered.
Piquemal was previously arrested by Israeli authorities last year, alongside activist Greta Thunberg, during a Freedom Flotilla mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. He stated on Wednesday his intention to contest the Toulouse election results due to alleged foreign meddling.
In a parliamentary session later, Piquemal condemned the actions, citing them as threats to national sovereignty and indicating potential risks to the upcoming presidential election’s integrity in France.
He further inquired whether the government would call upon the Israeli ambassador for explanations.
