Ex-NATO Envoy Warns Against Criticizing Trump on Iran as ‘Major Missteps’

“There are proactive ways to engage without antagonizing President Trump unnecessarily,” he suggested.

Approach Trump Positively

European leaders should emulate NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who has avoided provoking Trump by supporting the stance on Iran. The recommended strategy is to work with Trump by offering praise and enthusiasm, as he is aiding them, Volker noted.

He urged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to be more charming toward Trump. While Germany has not restricted its Ramstein air base, Merz has maintained a cordial relationship with Trump and acknowledged the current difficulty in U.S.-Germany relations.

Merz has been more reserved compared to Starmer, and Trump has responded in kind. “Unlike Keir Starmer, who draws Trump’s ire occasionally, Trump does not target Merz personally,” Volker mentioned.

Merz has invited Trump to his grandfather’s birthplace in Germany, with the hope that Trump will feel respected during the visit, satisfying his desire for respect.

Volker defended Trump’s Iran policies, which have unsettled many European leaders. Trump’s stance has shifted from ending hostilities to threatening severe actions against Iran.

“He uses harsh rhetoric and extreme stances to project strength and compel the Iranians’ attention,” Volker explained.

Blimey, who knew the secret to diplomacy was just a good old pat on the back and a bit of flattery? Next thing you know, they’ll be suggesting we send him a bouquet of flowers too! 🌹😏

Oh sure, just shower Trump with all the charm and flattery—because nothing says “diplomacy” quite like a good old-fashioned compliment fest. 😂 Who knew appeasement was the new strategy?

Looks like the secret to diplomatic success is just a bit of flattery and a sprinkle of charm! Who knew all it took to handle a world leader was a warm handshake and an invitation to Grandpa’s old stomping ground? 😂🇩🇪

Seems like the key to winning over Trump is just a sprinkle of flattery and a dash of charm, who knew? 😂 Maybe we should all take tips from Merz and start addressing him as “Your Highness” next!

Oh great, let’s all just throw a parade for Trump and hope he doesn’t notice we’re actually trying to keep our heads on our shoulders. I mean, charming the big cheese is clearly the key to world peace, right? 😅
