Madrid has been a strong critic of the escalating Middle Eastern conflict, refusing to let the U.S. use Spanish bases for strikes. In a Wednesday address, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized the importance of international law and declared, “no to war.”
Defense Minister Robles clarified that Spain’s stance against Tehran attacks does not diminish its NATO value. She mentioned on Cadena Ser radio that a Spanish missile battery detected an Iranian missile over Turkey, affirming Spain’s commitment to the Atlantic Alliance.
Robles confirmed Spain’s readiness for a defensive mission to Cyprus following Iranian drone activity against British bases. The defense ministry later announced the deployment of the Cristobal Colón frigate to join Greek and French forces supporting Cyprus.
Robles met with U.S. Ambassador Benjamin León Jr., expressing Spain’s commitment to being an ally while upholding its principles and sovereignty. “Spain is a proud country that will not be lectured to,” Robles stated. “We demand respect.”
