“We were seriously concerned about the reports suggesting that there might have been a chance to involve law enforcement more, and we want to ensure that if any company has such an opportunity, they would take it further,” he added.
OpenAI’s head of policy, Chan Park, alongside six other company representatives, met with members of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Cabinet on Tuesday in Ottawa — a meeting that ministers later referred to as “disappointing.”
Justice Minister Sean Fraser stated his expectation for OpenAI to return with significant new safety measures.
“The message we delivered was clear: we expect changes to be implemented,” Fraser told reporters Wednesday. “If changes do not come quickly, the government will take action.”
Solomon has remarked “all options are on the table,” but did not confirm whether this includes banning OpenAI from Canada. The Liberal government is waiting for OpenAI’s proposals.
“Trust needs to be earned,” Fraser said. “We need to see what changes will be introduced from the company’s side, and also determine the best way forward.”
