Spain to Request Next EU Funds Disbursement This Month Amid Stalemate on Diesel Tax Hike

Madrid – The Minister of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, Carlos Cuerpo, announced on Friday that Spain plans to request the next tranche of the European recovery funds ‘Next Generation EU’ by the end of January, although he admitted that there has been no advancement regarding the milestone related to the diesel increase.

Speaking to the media after participating in a financial education event, the minister mentioned that Spain will make two more disbursement requests before the Recovery Plan concludes in 2026.

“We will submit the first of these requests at the end of January, with the next one expected in the summer, which will be the final one,” explained the Government’s economic chief, noting that they are working closely with the Commission to acknowledge the fulfillment of all associated milestones.

However, the diesel increase was a previous milestone that the Government was unable to get approved in Congress. Due to challenges in passing it through Congress, the European Commission granted Spain an additional six-month period to implement this measure, which must be approved by the end of January. Nonetheless, the minister acknowledged that no progress has been made. (January 16)
