“We are NATO partners with Denmark, and our full partnership remains intact,” Carney stated in his initial comments on the growing diplomatic dispute. “Our commitments to Article 5 and Article 2 of NATO remain, and we wholeheartedly support them.”
The Greenland issue has resurfaced due to Trump’s increasing rhetoric about U.S. interests in the Arctic, which has heightened tensions between Washington and the EU.
Denmark and several allies announced plans this week to enhance their military presence in Greenland.
Following discussions between Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and senior U.S. officials in Washington, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed that the EU has intensified investments and support for Greenland and will continue to collaborate on Arctic security with allies, including the U.S.
Carney mentioned that Greenland and Arctic sovereignty were part of his talks with Xi, noting a significant alignment of views on the matter.
