Renewables comprised 47.5% of electricity sources in the EU and 65.8% in Portugal in 2024

LUXEMBOURG – In 2024, renewable sources accounted for nearly half (47.5%) of electricity consumption in the European Union (EU), with Portugal ranking fourth at 65.8%, according to data released by Eurostat today.
Data from the EU’s statistical service shows that renewable energy made up 47.5% of the bloc’s gross electricity consumption, marking an increase of 2.1 percentage points (pp) from 2023.
Eurostat notes that this figure has nearly tripled (30 pp) since 2004, when it was just 15.9%. It rose to 28.6% in 2014 and reached 47.5% in 2024.
Wind power contributed 38.0% of the total, while hydropower accounted for 26.4%, together making up almost two-thirds of renewable electricity generation.
Solar energy contributed 23.4%, with solid biofuels and other renewables representing 5.8% and 6.4%, respectively.
Among EU Member States, Austria led with 90.1% of its electricity consumption from renewable sources, primarily hydroelectric.
Other leading countries include Sweden (88.1%, mostly hydro and wind), Denmark (79.7%, mainly wind), and Portugal (65.8%, predominantly hydro and wind).
Conversely, the countries with the lowest shares of renewable sources, all below 25%, include Malta (10.7%), Czech Republic (17.9%), Luxembourg (20.5%), Hungary and Cyprus (24.1% each), and Slovakia (24.9%). (14/01/26)

Not sure if I’m more impressed by the 47.5% renewables or by the fact that we’ve managed to triple our efforts since 2004! Next step, maybe we can even power a toaster with good intentions. 😂⚡️

Looks like the EU’s finally grasped the concept of “green energy,” huh? At this rate, Portugal might just power the whole continent with its fancy windmills and sunshine—who needs coal when you’ve got a beach? 😏💨💡

Looks like Portugal is just flexing its eco-muscles while the rest of us are still figuring out how to recycle our coffee cups. At this rate, we’ll need to start charging admission to their power plants! 😜🌱

Oh, look at us, patting ourselves on the back for finally hitting nearly half of our electricity from renewables—who knew it took us a continent of red tape and a couple of decades to figure out that wind and sun are actually free? 🌞💨 Wouldn’t want to rush into this green revolution too quickly, now would we? 😂

Looks like Portugal is really showing the rest of Europe how to turn sunshine and breezes into electricity—who knew Mother Nature could be such a reliable business partner? 😂

Imagine boasting about using nearly half renewables while the rest of us are still trying to figure out how to charge our phones without a blackout. 😂 Bravo, EU, keep patting yourselves on the back while Portugal’s sunbathing in green glory! 💚

Looks like the EU is finally getting their act together, eh? If only we could harness all that hot air from politicians too, we’d be at 100% renewables by now! 😏

  8. Can’t believe we’ve finally made it to nearly half! At this rate, we might just run out of excuses for all those coal plants gathering dust. 😂

Looks like the EU is finally getting its act together—almost half of our power is from renewables! Who knew Mother Nature had such a good PR team? 🌍⚡️

  10. So, almost half of the EU’s power comes from renewables now? Brilliant! Next, they’ll be telling us that the sun rises in the east—what a revelation! 🌞💼

Just what we needed, more stats to remind us how eco-friendly we are while still charging our phones with fossil fuels. 🌍💡 Cheers to Portugal—might as well put a wind turbine on every café table while we sip our espresso! ☕️😂

  12. Just a casual 47.5% of the EU’s electricity from renewables in 2024, eh? Must be a real shocker for those still warming their hands on coal-powered tea kettles! ☕️💨
