UK Ambassador and Embassy Staff Evacuated from Iran

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice following a consular change. This update follows the U.S. decision to evacuate some personnel from the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest U.S. base in the Middle East. A former U.S. official mentioned that aircraft had also been relocated, and Reuters initially reported this evacuation. The U.K. advises against all travel to Iran, urging British nationals there to reconsider their presence. The British envoy to Iran was summoned for a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, which included European diplomats. Britain’s Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer summoned Iran’s Ambassador to London for a meeting. U.K. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, speaking in Finland and Norway before the evacuation was known, commended Tehran’s protesters, particularly women, for their bravery amidst severe repression. She stressed international scrutiny on Iran and condemned the violence against protesters, especially with executions involved. Cooper emphasized sanctions and economic pressure on Iran but did not rule out the potential use of British resources by the U.S. for military actions.
