BBC Seeks Dismissal of Donald Trump’s Defamation Lawsuit

In a lawsuit filed last month, Trump demanded over $5 billion, accusing the corporation of misleadingly editing his January 6, 2021, speech delivered before the U.S. Capitol was stormed during the 2020 presidential election certification.

Trump’s lawsuit, submitted in federal court in Miami, alleges the BBC “maliciously” combined two of Trump’s statements made over 54 minutes apart to suggest he had incited his supporters to violence.

The corporation apologized to Trump when the erroneous edit was revealed but argued it didn’t warrant a defamation case.

The broadcaster stated the Panorama episode wasn’t shown on the global feed of the BBC News Channel, and programs on iPlayer, its catchup service, were available only in the U.K.

Public figures claiming defamation in the U.S. must prove “actual malice,” showing intent to spread false information or reckless disregard for the truth.

The BBC’s filing claims Trump “fails to plausibly allege” this and noted the documentary featured “extensive coverage of his supporters and balanced coverage of his path to reelection.”

BBC Director General Tim Davie and news CEO Deborah Turness announced their resignations in November after the public dispute with the U.S. president made headlines.

A BBC spokesperson stated: “As we have made clear previously, we will be defending this case. We are not going to make further comment on ongoing legal proceedings.”

Oh, the BBC must be quaking in their wellies over this one! £5 billion for a bit of editing? Sounds like someone’s fishing for a new golf course in Florida! 😂

Seems like Trump thinks he’s the only one who can edit the truth—blimey, mate, maybe he should try his hand at reality TV instead! 😂📺

Seems like Trump’s looking for a new hobby—maybe he should take up knitting instead of this legal tango with the Beeb. 😂 Good luck trying to prove “malice” when everyone knows the only thing malicious here is his hairdo!

Oh, brilliant, who needs a reality show when you can just sue a corporation for a bit of editing? I guess $5 billion is the new “let’s play nice” in Trump’s playbook. 😂💼

So, let me get this straight: a bloke who turns reality TV into a political career thinks he can sue the Beeb for a bit of editing? 😂 Talk about irony—only in the U.S., mate!

Good luck proving “actual malice” when your speeches are a masterclass in mixed signals – perhaps he’ll get a medal for creativity instead of $5 billion! 😂 #ClassicTrump

Looks like Trump’s got his knickers in a twist over a dodgy edit—£5 billion for a bit of BBC poor taste? Mate, I’d say just call it a ‘creative misunderstanding’ and save us all a headache! 😂

Looks like the BBC’s got a real “malicious” editing problem on their hands—who knew that cutting a 54-minute speech could lead to a $5 billion bill? 😂 Just when you thought reality couldn’t get more scripted!

Oh, brilliant! A $5 billion defamation claim from a guy who thinks “malice” is just a cheeky way of saying he’s misunderstood. 🤷‍♂️ Good luck proving that one, mate! 🍻

Nothing screams “I’m the victim” quite like a $5 billion defamation lawsuit over a bit of editing—who knew a few minutes could be worth so much? 😂 Guess the BBC should stick to making tea instead of documentaries! 🍵

Typical Trump, always aiming for the gold medal in Olympic whining. £5 billion? Blimey, mate, for that kind of dosh, he could’ve at least bought himself a proper editing team! 😂

If only demanding $5 billion could actually buy you a sense of humor, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Seems like someone’s still trying to master the art of the dramatic exit, just like a bad magician at a U.K. pub. 🍻

Looks like the BBC’s in a bit of a pickle, eh? Who knew editing a speech could lead to a £5 billion chat with the orange fella? 🍊💸
