Sánchez argues that the EU should uphold an equal relationship with the US, rather than one of "vassalage"

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized on Monday that the European Union should uphold a relationship of equality with the United States, rather than one of “vassalage” under the Trump administration.

Sánchez shared his pro-Atlanticism stance during a press conference alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Palacio de la Moncloa, where they discussed the current geopolitical landscape.

They examined issues including Ukraine, Venezuela, and Trump’s ambitions concerning Greenland, following his remarks about acquiring the territory “by fair means or foul.”

The Spanish leader noted that Madrid recently signed a declaration with other European nations regarding this issue, asserting that Arctic security can be assured.

He emphasized that collective security does not contradict the security of the United States.

“We are a pro-Atlanticist government that values the Atlantic Alliance, yet this relationship must not involve inequalities. It is essential to collaborate based on mutual respect and shared values among all Western nations,” he said, reiterating the importance of an equal partnership rather than one of “vassalage.”

He argued that defending these principles is crucial in the face of Russian President Vladímir Putin and “any situation involving the infringement of International Law,” referencing Trump’s Greenland intentions.

In response, Mitsotakis remarked that the future of Greenland should be determined by its people and Denmark, urging the European Union to lead in protecting the interests of its member states.

He expressed optimism that solutions to Arctic security challenges could benefit both sides of the Atlantic, advocating for a unified European Union.

The two leaders also acknowledged the strong bilateral relations between Spain and Greece, emphasizing the importance of cooperation on shared European agenda priorities.

They specifically highlighted the upcoming negotiations on the EU budget framework, particularly concerning the Common Agricultural Policy and the implementation of the migration pact.

Additionally, Sánchez and Mitsotakis celebrated the economic resurgence of Spain and Greece, noting that both countries were once seen as the “sick men of Europe” and are now viewed as examples of progress.

Sánchez also underscored the significance of the recent agreement between the EU and Mercosur, agreeing with Mitsotakis on the necessity of supporting Ukraine and striving for lasting peace in the Middle East. (January 12)

Oh sure, Pedro, let’s just remind the US that we’re not their lapdogs anymore while we’re at it! 😂 Nothing says “equal partnership” quite like a good old-fashioned press conference, right?

Oh, how delightful! Nothing says “equal partnership” quite like arguing against being a glorified sidekick to the US. Must be nice to play the diplomat while sipping espresso! ☕️😏

Isn’t it charming how Sánchez thinks the US will suddenly treat us as equals rather than just a fancy side dish on their geopolitical menu? 🍽️ Bravo, mate, let’s just hope they don’t put us on the back burner! 🔥

Seems like Sánchez is aiming for a fairytale ending in the transatlantic relationship, but good luck convincing the US to see us as partners and not just a fancy side plate at their banquet. 🍽️ Who knew a PM could juggle geopolitics and fairy tales simultaneously? 😂

Of course, nothing says “equal partnership” quite like a press conference with a side of geopolitical drama, eh? 😂 Just what we need—more declarations while the rest of us are busy trying to find our socks post-Brexit!

Seems like Sánchez is really pushing for a “friendship” with the US, but let’s hope it’s more like a buddy comedy than a master-servant tale, eh? 😏✌️

Oh, isn’t it charming how Sánchez dreams of an “equal” partnership with the US, as if they’re not just a buddy expecting us to fetch coffee? 😂 Quite the revolutionary idea, really – next, he’ll suggest we all hold hands and sing Kumbaya at the next summit!

So, Sánchez claims the EU should be on equal footing with the US, instead of playing the role of a loyal puppy. Nice to see our leaders finally figuring out that barking doesn’t get you treats! 🐾

Looks like Sánchez has finally figured out that we’re not just the US’s backup dancers in this geopolitical ballet. 🤦‍♂️ Equality, eh? Maybe we should charge them for the privilege of our company! 😂

Looks like Sánchez thinks Europe is ready to play in the big leagues without being the US’s lapdog. I mean, who needs a spine when you can just be a “pro-Atlanticist,” right? 😏

Brilliant, isn’t it? Our dear Sánchez wants us to play at being equals with the US while we’re still figuring out who’s paying for the next round of tapas. 🍷🇪🇸

Of course, because nothing screams “equal partnership” like a bunch of European leaders discussing how to navigate the whims of a former reality TV star. Just what we need, more declarations while our coffee goes cold! ☕️🤣

Seems like Sánchez is really pushing for that “equal relationship” with the US—because who wouldn’t want to sit at the big kids’ table while still being served a nice plate of vassalage? 🍽️😂
