Dialogue with Putin? “We are not there yet,” says EU spokesperson.

Brussels – Paula Pinho, spokesperson for the European Commission, stated, “We are not there yet,” in response to inquiries about the potential renewal of discussions with the Kremlin’s leader.

“However, we hope that at some point, discussions will take place that can lead to peace in Ukraine,” she continued.

She expressed concern, noting, “Unfortunately, we do not see any indication that President Putin is interested in such discussions.”

Both Ms. Meloni and Mr. Macron have deemed it beneficial to reconnect with the Russian president, with the Italian prime minister proposing the idea of appointing an EU special envoy for Ukraine to facilitate this potential dialogue with Moscow.

Ms. Meloni stated that this approach “would allow us to summarize and speak with one voice” since “throughout the negotiations, many voices have emerged and various formats have been present.”

When asked about this proposal from Rome, the spokesperson refrained from engaging in any “speculation” on the matter. (12 January 2026)

Next thing you know, they’ll be suggesting a Eurovision-style contest for peace talks. 🎤 Because nothing says diplomacy like a catchy tune and some glitter, right? 😂

  3. Oh sure, because nothing says “we’re getting somewhere” like a game of diplomatic hide-and-seek with the Kremlin. Perhaps next we’ll send them a postcard? 🕵️‍♂️✈️

  4. Looks like the EU’s idea of a chat with Putin is about as likely as finding a sober bear in a Russian forest. 🍻 But hey, at least they’re keeping the hope alive with a sprinkle of diplomatic fairy dust! 😂

Looks like the EU is playing a game of hide and seek with Putin—too bad it’s mostly hiding! 🤷‍♂️ Meanwhile, peace talks seem as likely as finding a decent cup of coffee in a British café. 😅☕

  11. Oh, brilliant, more waiting for a chat with Vladimir – I suppose patience is a virtue, eh? At this rate, we’ll be having tea with the Tzar before the EU picks up the phone! ☕🤷‍♂️

  12. Looks like we’re all just waiting for Putin to RSVP to our little chat, eh? Maybe we should send him a nice invitation with an RSVP deadline—just to keep things interesting! 😂

Oh, of course, because nothing screams “we’re ready for talks” like a collective shrug from Brussels! 🤷‍♂️ Maybe we should just send Putin a postcard with “Wish you were here!” on it.

Just what we need, more talks that lead us to another round of “let’s pretend we know what we’re doing” with Putin. I mean, why not throw a tea party and hope for the best? 🍵😏

  19. Oh sure, because nothing says “let’s chat” like a game of diplomatic hide-and-seek with Putin. 🤔 Who needs peace when you can have endless meetings with a side of wishful thinking? 🥴
