German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Monday to discuss key issues. This meeting precedes a high-level session between Greenland, Denmark, and U.S. officials planned for Wednesday.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently stated that a U.S. invasion of Greenland would mark the end of NATO. Members of Merz’s government have taken a more diplomatic approach, attempting to address security concerns raised by Trump without fracturing the alliance.
“Our goal is to collaboratively enhance security for Greenland,” Merz stated on Monday. “I expect U.S. involvement, and the level of their participation will become clearer during upcoming discussions.”
Wadephul echoed these sentiments before his meeting with Rubio.
“Donald Trump highlights a valid point about the Arctic’s role in NATO security,” Wadephul told public broadcaster ZDF. “This shared understanding should guide our talks. We believe these matters can be addressed internally.”
Trump has emphasized Greenland’s importance for U.S. security, criticizing Denmark for insufficient protective measures against Chinese and Russian Arctic activities. Experts largely dispute this view, noting that Russian and Chinese military efforts are primarily focused on the eastern Arctic.
