Von der Leyen Condemns Violent Crackdown on Iranian Protesters

The anti-government protests persisted on Saturday amidst reports of overwhelmed hospitals and the Iranian military urging citizens to counter “enemy plots.” Human Rights Activists in Iran noted that at least 65 people had died by Friday, 2,311 had been arrested, and protests occurred at 512 locations across 180 cities. Time magazine reported more than 200 deaths in the protests. A Western diplomat conveyed to POLITICO that higher death toll reports from NGOs were “credible.” An NCRI spokesperson suggested that initial assessments of deaths in smaller Iranian towns indicated a significantly higher toll than formally confirmed. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola called for the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization and for further sanctions on the Iranian regime. She emphasized action over words for those protesting and in detention, suggesting the designation of the Guard as terrorists and expanding EU sanctions against regime supporters. Metsola’s previous support for protesters earned a reaction from the Iranian Mission to the EU, while EU diplomat Kaja Kallas condemned violence against protesters as “unacceptable.” Other MEPs supported Metsola’s sentiments, like German Green Hannah Neumann, who saw the protests as a “breaking point” for Iran.

Seems like everyone’s got a lot to say about human rights these days, yet when the chips are down, it’s all just political hot air, innit? 🤷‍♂️ Typical EU style – lots of sanctions, but no one’s lifting a finger to help!

Seems like a classic case of “let’s just ignore the elephant in the room” while throwing around fancy words. 🤷‍♂️ But hey, at least the EU is consistent in their endless calls for action that lead to absolutely nothing, right? 😂

Seems like Europe’s diplomatic heavyweights are really putting their foot down this time. Just what we needed—more stern letters and profound statements while the real action happens on the streets! 🤷‍♂️

Typical of Europe, isn’t it? Condemning human rights abuses while sipping an espresso in a cozy café—action is clearly just an optional extra on the menu! ☕️💼

Oh, look at the EU, finally taking a stand while the rest of us just sit back and enjoy the show! 🍿 Maybe next they’ll send a strongly worded letter, that ought to do the trick! 😂

Oh, fantastic, yet another round of finger-wagging from the EU while the real action is happening on the ground. Can’t wait to see how this sternly-worded letter changes anything, must be quite the thriller! 😂

Seems like the EU’s got a solid game plan: lots of talking, a sprinkle of sanctions, and a dash of “let’s see what happens next.” 🙄 Meanwhile, the citizens of Iran are just trying to survive the real-life horror show.

Seems like the EU’s tough love approach is working wonders—nothing says “we care” like a sternly worded letter and a few extra sanctions, right? 🤷‍♂️

Seems like the EU is all about strong words these days – maybe they should put “action” in the next budget meeting instead of just on social media. 🙄💼

Oh, just another day of politicians shaking their fists while the world burns—bravo! 🎭 If only harsh words could heal the wounded, we’d have a real miracle on our hands, innit?

Seems like the Iranian government really nailed the art of crowd control—by turning peaceful protests into a masterclass in how to lose public support. 🤦‍♂️ At this rate, they should give medals for the most creative ways to be utterly out of touch! 🇮🇷💔

Funny how the EU is always ready to roll out the sanctions like it’s a buffet, while the real dish is just more empty words. 🙄 If only condemning violence paid the bills, we’d all be millionaires by now! 💰

Seems like another day in the office for the Euro politicians – maybe they’ll finally realize that words don’t heal the wounded, eh? 🎭 #ActionNotWords

Just what we needed, another high-ranking official casting a shadow of disapproval from the comfort of their cushy office. 🤷‍♂️ Keep those strong word salads coming, Roberta! 🍽️

Looks like the EU is really rolling up their sleeves this time – I mean, who doesn’t love a good statement about human rights while sipping on overpriced coffee in Brussels? 🙄☕️

Oh, look at that! Another day, another European politician shaking their fist at Iran while enjoying a nice latte. Bravo, folks, it’s almost as if they think stern letters will do the trick! ☕️💼
