The Russian defense ministry stated that their recent attack was in response to an alleged Ukrainian assault on President Putin’s residence on December 29, a claim which Kyiv has refuted.
“It’s nonsensical for Russia to justify this strike with a fictitious ‘Putin residence attack’ that never took place,” Ukraine’s Sybiha stated on X. “This further demonstrates that Moscow doesn’t require genuine reasons for its acts of terror and war.”
Ukraine’s Western Air Command reported on Facebook that the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile traveled at about 13,000 kilometers per hour, with social media accounts indicating the impact occurred mere minutes after air-raid alerts were activated.
The Lviv regional military administration confirmed that specialists ran onsite tests and lab analyses following the attack.
“The radiation levels are normal,” they noted, adding that no dangerous materials were found in the air.
Sybiha declared that Ukraine will be pushing for an emergency United Nations Security Council session in reaction to the attack.
“Launching such a missile near the EU and NATO borders presents a grave threat to European continent security and a challenge to the transatlantic community,” Sybiha wrote. “We call for a decisive reaction to Russia’s reckless conduct.”
