Climate Goals Established by Environment Ministers

Brussels – The EU heads of state and government have delegated the task of setting climate targets for 2040 to their environment ministers.

During their summit in Brussels, leaders expressed satisfaction in encouraging the EU Commission to “further develop conditions that support the EU’s industry and citizens in reaching the interim target by 2040.”

As anticipated, the environment ministers will determine the target in early November, likely aligning with the EU Commission’s proposal for a 90 percent reduction in emissions from 1990 levels.

Some EU nations, particularly in Eastern Europe, have sought to lower climate goals, but the EU Commission has responded by offering greater flexibility.
