Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde to Meet Pope Leo XIV

Brussels (Brussels Morning newspaper) – Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will meet Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on October 27, 2025, discussing humanitarian issues; Pope Leo XIV recently met King Charles III and Queen Camilla. This was announced on Friday, Oct 24, 2025.

As GVA News reported, Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium will meet Pope Leo XIV for a private audience at the Vatican on Monday afternoon, Oct 27, 2025. The Royal Palace announced the meeting on Friday, Oct 24, 2025. During the visit, they are expected to discuss humanitarian issues, social concerns, and the role of faith in society.

What will King Philippe and Queen Mathilde discuss with Pope Leo XIV?

Earlier this week, Pope Leo XIV welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla of England. Officials mentioned that the meeting was historic because Charles became the first British monarch to publicly pray with a Pope since the 16th-century split from the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV was elected in early May 2025, following the death of Pope Francis. He has focused on strengthening ties with world leaders and addressing global issues.

Belgium has had close ties with the Vatican since it became independent in 1830. Belgian kings and queens have often met the Pope for private audiences. King Baudouin, who ruled from 1951 to 1993, met with Popes Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II to discuss social and humanitarian issues.

King Albert II, who reigned from 1993 to 2013, also met with Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. King Philippe became monarch in 2013 and attended Pope Francis’s inauguration in March 2013.
