Paris – Teresa Ribera, the Commissioner for Competition and Vice-President of the Commission overseeing the Clean, Fair, and Competitive Transition, expressed on Thursday that “the genocide in Gaza underscores Europe’s failure to unify in action and voice, even amid rising protests across European cities,” during her address at the Sciences Po Paris graduate school.
The Twenty-Seven have been notably divided regarding their approach to Israel since the onset of its conflict in Gaza with Hamas, following an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist group on October 7, 2023, on Israeli territory.
While some nations, such as Germany, advocate for Israel’s right to self-defense in line with international law, others, including Spain, have been labeling the situation as a “genocide” against the Palestinian people in Gaza for several months.
The Commission proposed halting certain European funding for Israeli startups; however, this initiative has yet to gain approval from the member states. (September 4, 2025)
