Brussels – The European Commission is set to endorse the free trade agreement with Mercosur during a meeting on Wednesday, marking the initial formal step before the text is presented to the member states and the European Parliament.
This agreement aims to enhance the EU’s exports of vehicles, machinery, and alcoholic beverages to Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
In return, it would ease the import of South American products such as meat, sugar, rice, honey, and soy, which could potentially threaten certain agricultural sectors in Europe.
Since the negotiations concluded last December, France has consistently voiced its concerns regarding the current draft, perceiving it as a risk to various industries, including beef, poultry, sugar, and ethanol, and has called for additional protective measures.
According to two European sources, the Commission may propose an addition aimed at reassuring France by enhancing safeguard measures for “sensitive agricultural products.” (1st September 2025)
