Schuman Roundabout Canopy Requires More Funding

“The date is approaching—the point of no return—and since there’s no response, we’re assuming the funding is unavailable,” said the Beliris spokesperson.

The Schuman roundabout, undergoing renovations since fall 2023 and expected to be finished by next summer, is experiencing rising costs. The addition of a canopy, intended to enhance the pedestrian-friendly area dominated by greenery and bicycles rather than cars, has resulted in a €3 million financial shortfall.

In a letter to the Brussels government members, first reported by BRUZZ, Beliris mentioned that they plan to continue without the canopy, though this might lead to more expenses.

The caretaker government of Brussels had earlier asked the EU institutions for financial assistance to complete the Schuman roundabout, highlighting a lack of funds for the canopy in a June letter.

Brussels is dealing with a substantial budget deficit and political gridlock, with government negotiations stalled since the June 2024 elections.

Brussels’ leaders, including Minister-President Rudi Vervoort, Minister of European Relations and Urban Planning Ans Persoons, mobility and public works chief Elke Van den Brandt, and Interior Minister Bernard Quintin, responsible for Beliris, did not comment before publication.

  1. Looks like the Schuman roundabout’s canopy is going to need a magic wand instead of funding—because who doesn’t love a €3 million shortfall in a city already knee-deep in political muck? 😂

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a €3 million shortfall to really spice up a bureaucratic tango. Who needs a canopy in a roundabout anyway? Just let the rain fall on the poor pedestrians, it’s character-building, innit? ☔️😂

Looks like the Schuman roundabout is the gift that keeps on giving—just not in the wallet department. €3 million for a bit of shade? Maybe they should just stick an umbrella in the middle and call it a day! ☂️💸

Oh joy, nothing screams “we care about pedestrians” like a €3 million canopy we can’t afford! 😂 Seems like someone should’ve brought a calculator to the planning meetings, eh?

Seems like the Schuman roundabout’s canopy is the new Mona Lisa—everyone’s talking about it, but nobody’s got the cash to finish the masterpiece. 🙄💸

Funding issues for a fancy umbrella at the Schuman roundabout? Classic Brussels—who knew a bit of shade could cost us three million euro? 😂

  7. Looks like the Schuman roundabout just became the latest in a long line of Belgian masterpieces—beautiful, but utterly broke! 🤷‍♂️ Who needs a canopy when you can have a lovely view of budget deficits instead? 😂

  8. Oh, fantastic! Who needs a cozy canopy when we can just let the rain and budget deficits do the charming work for us? 🌧️💸 Guess it’s all part of the “Brussels experience,” right? 🤷‍♂️

Looks like the Schuman roundabout is all set to become a lovely bike park, just without the charm of a canopy—because who needs shade when you’ve got budget deficits, eh? 😂💸

Seems like the Schuman roundabout is about to become the world’s most expensive bicycle parking lot. Who needs a canopy when you can just let the rain do its magic, right? 😏💸

Seems like the Schuman roundabout is in a bit of a pickle—who knew adding a fancy canopy would cost more than a night out in Brussels? 🍻 Guess we’ll just keep the greenery and hope the pigeons don’t mind the lack of shade! 😂

  12. Surprise, surprise! Who knew that adding a bit of fabric to an already expensive roundabout could turn into a budgetary black hole? 🤷‍♂️ Looks like even the canopy’s gone on holiday while the funds remain stuck in traffic! 🏗️💸

  13. Just brilliant, isn’t it? Who needs a canopy over the Schuman roundabout when we can enjoy the lovely Brussels rain and a €3 million hole in our budget instead? 😂💸

Looks like the Schuman roundabout’s canopy is on a budget diet—maybe it’s trying to fit in with Brussels’ famous waffles, eh? 🍽️ Who knew a bit of shade would cost us a small fortune? 😏

So, let’s build a fancy canopy over a roundabout while the city is juggling a budget deficit like a clown at a circus! 🎪 Can’t wait to see it; it’ll be the most expensive place to stand under a drizzle! 😅

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “pedestrian-friendly” like a canopy that’s more elusive than a decent cup of coffee in a tourist trap! 🍵💰

Looks like the Schuman roundabout canopy is becoming as elusive as a decent cup of coffee in London. 😏 With a €3 million shortfall, maybe they should just stick a few umbrellas in the ground and call it a day, eh? 🏗️☔️

Looks like the Schuman roundabout’s canopy is more elusive than a good parking spot in Brussels! 🤷‍♂️ Who needs a fancy cover when you’ve got a nice drizzle to keep the pedestrians company?

  19. MrOnsTr Avatar

Seems like we’ve got a classic case of “let’s build a fancy canopy with no cash to pay for it,” eh? Must be a new strategy for attracting tourists—nothing like a lovely budget deficit to spruce up the place! 😂💸
