Denmark Permits AI Use in Matriculation Exams

Some Danish high school students will be permitted to use artificial intelligence starting in 2026 during the oral English exam in the matriculation exams, as announced by the Ministry of Education.

During the exam, students will have the opportunity to utilize AI in the preparatory phase of the oral exam: after receiving the topic, each student will have one hour to prepare, during which “all tools are allowed to be used, including generative AI.” Previously, this technology was not permissible.

The country’s education minister stated the aim is to find the right balance between the analog and digital worlds.

While AI is permitted during the exam, the student is also required to present orally to the examiner, reports AFP.

Denmark, which has allowed controlled use of the internet during exams since 2008, aims to promote digital development in education through a strict framework.

“We are initiating these experiments to discover the right balance. When students develop in both the analog and digital worlds, we prepare them in the best way possible for life after school,” said Minister Mathias Tesfaye.

This experiment is available to high schools that choose to participate and is only applicable to the general education program.
