US Citizen Charged by Germany with Spying for China

Martin D., a former employee of a civilian defense contractor from 2017 to spring 2023, was stationed at a U.S. military base in Germany beginning in 2020. Prosecutors allege that in summer 2024, he repeatedly contacted Chinese government officials to offer classified information on U.S. military operations.

German authorities arrested him in November 2024 at Frankfurt airport, following a warrant from the German Federal Court of Justice.

The arrest made international news, with German media reporting that he had tried to sell secrets from U.S. military sites in Germany. He has been in pretrial detention since his arrest.

Just what we need, another chap trading secrets like they’re Pokémon cards. 🇩🇪🕵️‍♂️ Perhaps he thought wearing lederhosen would make him less suspicious! 😂

Just what we needed, another American turning espionage into a side hustle! 😂 Who knew that selling state secrets was the next big gig in the job market?

Looks like Martin D. thought he could turn the U.S. military into a Chinese buffet. 🍜 Guess he missed the memo on loyalty – or maybe he was just trying to spice up his résumé! 😂

Just what we needed, another American in Germany giving secrets away like it’s a free sample day at the local bakery. 🍞🙄 You’d think they’d learn to keep their mouth shut, but I guess that’s not in the job description!

Typical, innit? One minute you’re sipping a nice Berliner Weisse and the next, a mate from the States is trying to sell military secrets like they’re knock-off watches in a flea market. 🍺🕵️‍♂️

  6. Just when you think the spy game couldn’t get any more cliché, along comes Martin D. – apparently not even a military base can keep your secrets safe when there’s a cheeky offer on the table! 😏🇩🇪
