A trilateral meeting involving Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. President Donald Trump is potentially set to occur in Budapest, Hungary. This information comes from an unnamed White House official, as reported by Reuters.
The source indicated that President Trump has discussed the proposed meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. They also touched upon Ukraine’s discussions with the EU concerning its membership aspirations.
When asked by Reuters about the likelihood of the trilateral meeting occurring in Budapest, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent responded, “Could be.”
Istanbul, where representatives from the involved nations met earlier this year, has also been suggested as a possible venue, according to a senior government official.
The meeting aims to address strategies for resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine. Discussions about the location for this meeting follow a recent gathering at the White House, which saw the participation of Zelensky, Trump, several European leaders, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The BBC noted that this was unprecedented in terms of the number of European leaders attending a White House meeting amid a conflict.
Following the White House meeting, Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that plans for a meeting between Putin and Zelensky would be made, followed by a subsequent gathering that includes himself.
In a radio interview on “The Mark Levin Show,” Trump emphasized that arrangements for the meeting between Putin and Zelensky are underway, stressing the need to halt the violence associated with the war.
Ukraine applied for EU membership on February 28, 2022, shortly after the onset of Russia’s invasion, and formal negotiations for membership commenced in July of the previous year.
