Blanár: Slovakia Supports U.S. Peace Efforts and Hopes for Progress in Alaska Negotiations

Bratislava – The Slovak Republic expresses support for the intensified peace efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Slovak Foreign Minister, Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD), made this statement ahead of the upcoming meeting between the Presidents of the USA and Russia in Alaska, highlighting Slovakia’s endorsement of the joint statement from 26 EU nations regarding Ukraine, as reported by TASR.

Blanár noted that Slovak diplomacy maintains communication with U.S. partners at multiple levels and has been actively involved in discussions during the extraordinary EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting. This gathering of member states took place before a video conference involving various European leaders and Trump, where Slovakia reiterated its support for the EU statement concerning Ukraine, he clarified.

In preparation for the summit, Slovakia urged all parties involved to engage constructively in the negotiations and to diligently seek shared solutions for a sustainable peace in Ukraine, according to the statement.

“Since its inception, the government of the Slovak Republic has maintained that this conflict lacks a military resolution. Our enduring position asserts that only diplomatic negotiations can put an end to the senseless bloodshed, human suffering, and destruction of the country,” stated the Slovak Foreign Minister.

He emphasized that the results of these peace efforts will significantly influence stability and security across Europe. Consequently, he urged the EU to take a more proactive role in backing the U.S. peace initiatives. For Slovakia, it is crucial to restore respect for international law, particularly the foundational principles outlined in the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act, in the quest for a peaceful conflict resolution, Blanár remarked.

“I am hopeful that the outcome of today’s summit in Alaska will bring us closer to achieving peace, fostering mutual trust, and halting the erosion of vital international law principles,” he concluded. (August 15)
