İmamoğlu, the primary political adversary of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been selected as the CHP’s candidate for the 2028 presidential election in Turkey. He denies any wrongdoing and asserts his imprisonment is politically driven.
The opposition party has seen a steady rise in popularity, performing strongly in last year’s regional elections by winning the fiercely contested mayoral race in Istanbul, capturing districts traditionally controlled by Erdoğan’s ruling Islamist party. Additionally, the CHP secured victories in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, as well as in Izmir, Bursa, and Adana, increasing its nationwide support to 37.8 percent and winning 35 of 81 provinces.
Erdoğan’s government claims the arrests are not politically driven, while rights organizations argue they aim to halt the CHP’s increasing influence.
İmamoğlu’s arrest in March led to significant protests, which the government in Ankara suppressed through thousands of arrests. Since then, Turkish authorities have detained dozens more opposition figures.
