Ljubljana – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob expressed his approval of the European Commission’s stance that Israel is violating the human rights of Palestinians. He anticipates that EU member states will endorse the Commission’s recommendation for a partial suspension of Israel’s involvement in the Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
“The European Commission has finally taken a definitive stance, indicating that Israel systematically and extensively breaches the human rights of Palestinians, thus violating the core principles of EU-Israel cooperation. We expect member states to back the proposal for a partial suspension of Israel’s participation in Horizon Europe with a qualified majority,” Golob stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized Slovenia’s commitment to advocating for “more decisive actions against the Israeli government.”
On Monday, the European Commission suggested a partial suspension of Israel’s participation in Horizon Europe due to the ongoing human rights violations in Gaza. This proposal affects the involvement of Israeli companies in the European Innovation Council (EIC), which focuses on fostering breakthrough innovations.
Sources indicate that the Commission has submitted the proposal to EU member states; however, a decision has yet to be reached.
For the proposal to pass, it requires the backing of a qualified majority of member states in the EU Council, which means at least 15 out of 27 countries, representing a minimum of 65 percent of the total EU population, must agree.
Slovenia is recognized as a prominent advocate for EU actions against Israel regarding human rights infringements. Following a lack of EU response, Slovenia designated two Israeli ministers as undesirable individuals in mid-July.
