Cuts to US Tariffs on British Steel Coming ‘Pretty Soon,’ Says Trump

In response to a question from POLITICO about when the deal would be enforced at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, Trump stated it would happen “pretty soon.”

He added, “You have no idea. These people are tough negotiators. But we’re a big buyer of steel. We’re going to make our own steel; we’re going to make our own aluminum, for the most part. But we buy a lot of aluminum from here and a lot of steel, too.”

Starmer confirmed that the tariff cut was “already covered in the deal that we’ve agreed,” adding, “we’re just doing the implementation of that.”

According to UK Steel, representing the British steel industry, the UK currently exports around 200,000 tonnes of steel annually to the US, worth over £400 million. It called the imposition of US tariffs on British steelmakers a “devastating blow” that would stifle exports.

Trump said earlier on Monday that he is “going to look at” a blanket 10 percent tariff on most UK goods.

Pressed on whether he would consider any reduction to the 10 percent reciprocal tariff rate on the UK — the lowest of any US trading partner to date — the president appeared buoyant.

Just what we needed, a “pretty soon” from the master of urgency himself. I mean, who doesn’t love a good negotiation over steel while the whole world is watching, eh? 😂

  2. Looks like we’re all just waiting for Trump to drop those tariffs like it’s the hottest new dance move. If only he could negotiate as well as he tweets! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Can’t wait for the “pretty soon” steel bonanza; nothing says progress like ambiguous timelines and a side of confusion. Cheers to more negotiations that are as clear as mud! 😏

  4. Oh brilliant, just what we needed—Trump’s “pretty soon” is basically the European version of “I’ll get back to you next week.” 🙄 Meanwhile, Starmer looks like he’s trying to convince a room full of cats to cooperate. 🐱

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—more “pretty soon” promises from the master of vague timelines. If only negotiating was as easy as tossing around phrases like “big buyer of steel”! 😏

Seems like the steel game is a bit like a Brexit negotiation—lots of talk, not much action. But hey, who needs tariffs when you’ve got charm and a big hat? 🇺🇸😏

Looks like our dear Trump thinks cutting tariffs is as easy as pie, eh? 🍰 Just a stroll in the park while sipping tea with Keir, I suppose! Cheers to tough negotiators and even tougher steel! 😏💼
