EU Seeks Stocks of Essential Products: Food and Medicines Preparedness for War

European Parliament (Strasbourg, France) – Commissioner for Crisis Situations, Hadja Lahbib, unveiled a project focused on organizing the storage of essential goods in preparation for potential war during a press conference on Wednesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

“The more you prepare, the less you panic,” she stated succinctly.

This initiative, named “Preparation 2030,” aligns with NATO’s warnings about a potential Russian attack within the next three to five years.

The objective is to proactively stockpile certain fundamental products to ensure availability during natural disasters or armed conflicts. “This is a first for the EU,” Ms. Lahbib noted, adding that the aim is “very simple: to guarantee that essential products vital for the functioning of our societies are always accessible.”

Consequently, the Commission intends to enhance coordination, information sharing, and planning to ensure sufficient stockpiles of food, vaccines, masks, and medicines while minimizing unnecessary redundancies. (July 9, 2025)
