High temperatures have recently impacted Albania, leading to fire outbreaks in several regions, particularly in the Finiq area in the south.
A significant fire burned for five days in a challenging mountainous region between Malçan and Grazhdan, within the Municipality of Finiq.
After several days of efforts by Albanian Civil Emergencies, the fire was brought under control with the assistance of two planes from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
This activation of the EU’s emergency reserve involved two firefighting planes stationed in Greece, which helped to extinguish the blaze near the Greek border.
Last year, EU Civil Protection Mechanism aircraft were also essential in combating extensive fires in Dropull and Finiq.
Albania became a Participating State of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in November 2022, a system that has provided support in various situations since then.
The massive fires that struck the country last year necessitated the aid of the European Civil Emergency Mechanism.
This mechanism underpins the EU’s disaster risk management strategy.
Albania’s participation is seen as a significant advancement in enhancing regional collaboration for disaster management.
As a full member of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Albania can receive immediate support and offer assistance to other countries facing disasters, fostering a more robust and coordinated response to crises across Europe and beyond.
The EU Civil Protection Mechanism aims to fortify cooperation among EU nations and eight participating states (Iceland, Norway, Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and recently Albania) for civil protection, enhancing prevention, preparedness, and response efforts to disasters.
