Pride and Platforms: An Interview with EU Commissioner Michael McGrath

EU Commissioner Michael McGrath participated in an interview with a group of eight journalists from agencies associated with the European Newsroom (enr), continuing a series of discussions with high-level EU officials. The 48-year-old Irish politician, who oversees democracy, justice, the rule of law, and consumer protection, spent 45 minutes at the Berlaymont building in Brussels addressing various topics.

The journalists posed numerous questions, focusing primarily on the rule of law within EU member states, with a particular emphasis on Hungary. Recently, a large Pride parade advocating for LGBTIQ+ rights took place in Hungary, despite government bans and criticism directed at EU representatives who supported the demonstrators. McGrath firmly rebutted this criticism during the interview.

Other subjects discussed included the upcoming “Democracy Shield” initiative from the EU Commission and consumer protection measures aimed at safeguarding minors in online gaming. McGrath elaborated on the EU’s strategies to manage and regulate the significant influx of inexpensive and potentially hazardous product imports from China.

Participating agencies included APA (Austria), ANSA (Italy), CTK (Czech Republic), dpa (Germany), EFE, and Europa Press (Spain). Tim Kohnen and Christian Röwekamp from the enr supported the agency journalists by asking questions on behalf of other organizations that could not attend the interview in person.

After the interview, materials were shared with all enr agencies for their respective news outlets. This initiative exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and information sharing, a core objective of the European Newsroom.

The enr also created two Key Stories based on the interview:

Story 1: EU Rule of Law Commissioner McGrath responds to Orbán’s Budapest Pride criticisms

Story 2: EU Commissioner McGrath states Chinese trading platforms must adhere to EU regulations

Just what we needed, another 45-minute chat with an EU bigwig about rule of law and consumer protection—because obviously, that’s what the folks back home are dying to hear about! 🙄 #GameChanger

Seems like a riveting chat about the rule of law and consumer protection – because who doesn’t love a good ol’ debate while sipping espresso in Brussels? ☕️💼 All that’s missing is a parade float and a catchy tune! 🎉
