Fico Discusses Eurozone, Russian Gas, and EU Sanctions with Spanish Prime Minister

Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) held a phone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez concerning the political leadership of the eurozone and the proposed halt of Russian gas supplies to the European Union (EU). This information was released by the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic on Tuesday.

“At the request of the Spanish side, I discussed the eurozone’s political leadership with Prime Minister Sánchez, where I showed support for the Spanish candidate. We also talked about the European Commission’s proposal to stop Russian gas supplies to the EU starting January 1, 2028,” Fico stated.

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo is a contender for the presidency of the Eurogroup, where he aims to challenge the current head, Paschal Donohoe from Ireland.

Fico noted that Sánchez is aware of Slovakia’s concerns, and he conveyed that without binding guarantees to mitigate the impact of halting Russian gas from January 1, 2028, Slovakia cannot support the 18th EU sanctions package against Russia.

On Monday (June 30), Fico also spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about the import of Russian gas into Slovakia and EU anti-Russian sanctions. (July 1)
