Macron Announces Ban on Social Media for Under-15s in France

He revealed that France will soon require age verification on websites selling knives, similar to the current rules for pornographic sites.

“A 15-year-old will no longer be able to buy a knife online. We will enforce significant financial penalties and bans,” he stated. Previously, Prime Minister François Bayrou expressed intentions to rapidly outlaw knife sales to minors.

Later, on X, Macron declared: “I’m banning social media for children under 15. Platforms can verify age. Let’s implement it.”

French officials are advancing plans to mandate certain social media platforms — including X, Reddit, Bluesky, and Mastodon — to introduce age checks, classifying them as pornographic sites.

France’s regulations requiring porn sites to verify users’ ages took effect on June 7, leading Pornhub, the largest porn site, to cease operations in France. This triggered a rapid increase in demand for virtual private network services, which allow users to mask their location, immediately surged.
