Bled – Slovenia has joined other EU member states in supporting the implementation of countermeasures against the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum announced on Wednesday. The European Union plans to gradually introduce additional tariffs of up to 25% on U.S. goods valued at approximately 20 billion euros. Minister of Economy, Tourism, and Sports Matjaž Han anticipates further measures with a delayed rollout, emphasizing the need for an agreement during this period, as he believes that “the madness of these trade wars” could have detrimental effects on both Europe and the U.S.
During a discussion in Bled, Minister Han expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump would recognize that the current path is detrimental to the economy. When asked about the implications of recent events for Slovenia, he noted that the ministry, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and industry stakeholders, is consistently analyzing the impacts.
Currently, Han stated that “there is not such a catastrophe” for Slovenia, but he highlighted potential indirect effects stemming from the country’s automotive sector’s involvement in European supply chains. Overall, Han views the current global economic situation as very troubling and questions why some are exacerbating existing problems. He believes it is essential to remain level-headed and make informed decisions based on thorough analysis. (April 9)
