A spokesperson emphasized that as a member of the Council of Europe and an EU candidate, Turkey is expected to uphold democratic principles. This includes respecting the rights of elected officials and ensuring the right to peaceful protest is fully protected.
However, the spokesperson declined to speculate on whether high-level discussions between the EU and Turkey, scheduled for April, might be canceled in response to recent events.
Meanwhile, İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a widely popular secularist regarded as a strong challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was officially nominated as the opposition’s candidate for the presidency on Monday—despite being jailed the day before.
