A Downing Street spokesperson stated that this week’s meeting further emphasized the need for the coalition to have concrete plans prepared for any possible scenario.
The British prime minister outlined the formation of new sub-planning groups focused on land, sea, air, regeneration, and reconstruction. These groups are scheduled to meet again over a three-day period next week.
He reaffirmed to allies his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin is attempting to hinder and stall ceasefire negotiations.
The U.K., along with France, has played a leading role in securing peacekeeping commitments in the event of a ceasefire in Ukraine. This comes as the U.S. continues to withhold any guarantees of support for European forces.
Amid speculation that the U.K. may shift its focus toward air and sea deployments rather than a land presence, the prime minister’s spokesperson dismissed the notion of a strategic change. “Clearly, thousands of troops will be required to support any deployment, whether at sea, on land, or in the air,” he stated.
The next round of Russian-U.S. ceasefire talks is set to begin on Monday in Saudi Arabia. The U.K. is also expected to participate in the upcoming high-level “coalition of the willing” meeting being held in France on Thursday.
