Temse (Eurotoday) – A tragic traffic accident claimed four lives in Elversele near Temse. Two vehicles collided head-on inside a tunnel on the N41. Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Among the victims were two sisters and their children, aged 3 and 5, who lost their lives in the collision at the N41 tunnel in Elversele near Temse. The accident occurred around 2 a.m. when the two vehicles crashed into each other. The van driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital. Officials are still investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Legen Heirweg and Dorpstraat in Elversele. The vehicle carrying Turkish nationals was traveling along the N41 near Temse when the accident happened.
Mayor Hugo Maes (CD&V-Open VLD) confirmed the fatal incident, stating,
“In one car were 4 people from the same family of Turkish origin. They are 2 sisters and 2 children. They have all died. It is terrible.”
The young victims were just 3 and 5 years old. Medical personnel have not disclosed much information about the driver’s identity as they remain in critical condition. Authorities are actively investigating the crash, with further examinations needed to establish the precise cause.
What is the state of road safety in the Temse region?
The fatal head-on crash occurred on the N41, a crucial traffic route for both commuters and freight transport in the Temse region. Concerns over road safety in Belgium continue to rise, with an increasing number of fatalities in traffic incidents.
The Belgian Road Safety Institute reported 487 road accident deaths in 2022, marking a 4% increase from the previous year.
Although head-on collisions are relatively rare, they often result in severe injuries due to high vehicle speeds and poor visibility in tunnels and intersections. Studies have identified multiple hazardous locations in the Temse municipality, prompting officials to push for improved road infrastructure and stricter traffic law enforcement.

Oh joy, another tragic reminder that driving in tunnels at 2 a.m. is the new extreme sport – who knew? 😒 Perhaps they should just hand out life vests instead of licenses around here! #TunnelVision

Just what we needed—another tragic reminder that driving through tunnels is *definitely* the safest choice at 2 a.m. in Belgium. Maybe we should consider adding a “sleepy time” traffic sign for those with questionable judgment on the N41? 🥴🚗💨

Just another day on the N41, eh? Who knew a tunnel could double as a death trap? 🚗💥 Guess it’s not just the weather that’s gloomy in Belgium… 🥴
