New Delhi/Bratislava – Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) held a bilateral meeting on Wednesday with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. They underscored the crucial role of the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and India, as reported by TASR’s special correspondent.
Following their discussions, Blanár highlighted the significance of this agreement for Slovakia, particularly given the country’s robust automotive sector.
The negotiations regarding the free trade agreement are overseen by the Slovak Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, within the European Commission.
“This trade is vital for us, as high tariffs currently burden car imports from the EU. We aim to negotiate more favorable terms for Slovak importers in the free trade agreement with India,” stated Blanár. He also mentioned his plans to communicate with Commissioner Šefčovič and other officials from the European Commission to advocate for the swift conclusion of the agreement.
In addition, the two ministers discussed opportunities for educational collaboration, which could include student exchanges and partnerships between universities. Blanár also stressed the importance of cultural cooperation.
“I am pleased to note that our political relations are strong and becoming increasingly significant. Notably, we will host the President of India in Slovakia this April, accompanied by a major trade delegation from India,” added Blanár.
