Former British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has passed away at the age of 85, his family has announced. Prescott, who had been living with Alzheimer’s, died peacefully on Wednesday, surrounded by loved ones and the jazz music of Marian Montgomery.

In a touching statement, his family reflected on his lifelong dedication to public service, stating that Prescott spent his years “trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment.”

Prescott, a stalwart of the Labour Party, served as the MP for Hull for 40 years, representing the community he deeply cared for. “John dearly loved his home of Hull, and representing its people in Parliament for four decades was his greatest honour,” the family added.
