Twelve European Ministers Advocate for Unified Support for At-Risk Researchers

In Paris, on Wednesday, twelve European research ministers came together to sign a letter initiated by France, calling for a continent-wide meeting to coordinate efforts in accommodating foreign researchers whose work is at risk, particularly in light of recent developments in the United States.

The letter, sent to Ekaterina Zakharieva, the European Commissioner responsible for Start-ups, Research, and Innovation, emphasizes the need for “immediate action and concrete political dialogue.”

This initiative aims to “demonstrate solidarity and enhance the appeal of hosting exceptional foreign talent who may face barriers to their research and abrupt, unjustified funding cuts,” as stated in the letter sent to AFP.

French Research Minister Philippe Baptiste explained to AFP that he took the lead in rallying European counterparts “in response to the urgency created by the American administration’s policies on research,” referring to the significant budget cuts affecting various universities and research institutions. Oh, splendid! Just what we need—twelve ministers gathering to unite in solidarity like a bunch of well-heeled philosophers at a café, while the actual researchers are left wondering if they should pack their bags or just grab a croissant. 🍵💼 #Priorities

Oh, brilliant! Twelve ministers finally decide to coordinate—just in time for a good old European tea party, I suppose. 🍵 Meanwhile, researchers are left wondering if their work will survive longer than the latest fashion trend in Milan! 😂

Oh, splendid! Just what we need—twelve ministers gathered for a photo op to “support” at-risk researchers while sipping espresso. Who knew solidarity was as easy as signing a letter? 😂

Oh great, a dozen ministers getting cozy over a cuppa to discuss how to save researchers from the cutting block – because a nice chat always fixes funding issues, right? 😂 Just what we need, a EU-style hug fest while the American budget cuts do the tango!

Blimey, twelve ministers finally deciding to have a chinwag about at-risk researchers—must be a slow news day! 🤔 I suppose they needed a good excuse to swap their bureaucratic coffee mugs and feel like they’re doing something important. Cheers to “immediate action” that’s taken a bit longer than a French train! 🇫🇷🚆
