Brussels (Eurotoday) – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says she told Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar that Israel’s renewed military action in Gaza is “unacceptable.”
The Israeli army launched new air attacks on Gaza overnight and urged civilians to vacate “combat areas” in the north and south of the Palestinian regions on Wednesday, a day after conducting the deadliest raids on the Hamas-run enclave.
The European Union High Representative tells reporters in Brussels,
“Yesterday I also talked to Foreign Minister Sa’ar… what is happening, why are you doing this. And I mean, also conveying the message that this is unacceptable,”
Kallas says she was referring specifically to
“the loss of civilian lives.”
Kallas further says she will travel to Egypt to examine the crisis with the “Arab Quint” — Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, saying there was a need to raise diplomatic pressure on Israel.
What is the EU’s stance on Israel’s military campaign?
A day earlier, Kaja Kallas released a joint statement with European commissioners stating,
“The EU deplores the breakdown of the ceasefire in Gaza and the deaths of civilians, including children, in Israeli airstrikes,”
Calling on Israel to end the campaign and for Hamas to release all the hostages.
“The EU believes that the resumption of negotiations is the only way forward,”
The statement also said.
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has criticised the political use of humanitarian assistance in Gaza by the Israeli regime and urges for immediate facilitation of the delivery of support to the people of the region.
Kaja Kallas stated that all European nations condemn the military use of humanitarian assistance by Israel, saying that the humanitarian aid must enter Gaza.
“So, on Gaza, everybody condemned the politicisation of humanitarian aid. Humanitarian aid has to reach the people in need in Gaza, and we were also welcoming the Arab peace plan or Arab reconstruction plan for Gaza,”
She emphasised.
