Police Uncover Drug Lab in Maaseik Basement, Two Arrested

Maaseik (Eurotoday) – Police have discovered a drug laboratory hidden in the basement of a residence in Maaseik. Investigators traced the lab after identifying identical drug-making facilities at an agricultural company in Putte, Antwerp. Two suspects have been arrested.

Authorities located the drug lab after following leads from a previous investigation into a Putte-based agricultural business. Their first raid occurred in February, when a concealed cellar entrance led investigators to large quantities of substances used in synthetic drug production.

Following this discovery, police conducted house searches in Borgerhout, Lille, Mol, Putte, and Wijnegem, leading to the arrest of seven individuals. Four of the suspects remained in custody.

Further investigation revealed potential drug lab operations at a residence on Frederik Maldersstraat in Maaseik. Law enforcement conducted a raid on the property, uncovering drug manufacturing materials hidden in the basement. Two additional suspects were arrested and will appear before the investigating judge today.

“The judicial lab has arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation. Civil protection is also on-site to dismantle the lab safely, which may take some time,”

— Kristof Aerts, spokesperson for the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office.

Belgium’s Drug Lab Problem & Law Enforcement Efforts

Belgium has faced a growing challenge with synthetic drug production in recent years, particularly in regions such as Antwerp and Limburg. Europol reports that Belgium has become a key hub for drug trafficking in Europe, with illicit substances like amphetamines and ecstasy being produced in clandestine labs.

In 2022 alone, Belgian authorities dismantled over 30 drug labs and seized millions of euros worth of drugs and equipment. The rise of drug labs in Belgium is tied to its strategic location in Europe, extensive port facilities, and organized crime networks. The Port of Antwerp—one of Europe’s largest—has been a hotspot for drug smuggling.

Law enforcement agencies have escalated their efforts to tackle the issue through cross-border collaborations and advanced surveillance technologies.

Nice to see Maaseik stepping up its game in the “underground” business sector. Who needs a vineyard when you can have a drug lab in the basement, eh? 🍷💼

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed in Maaseik—a basement drug lab to spice up the neighborhood. Guess the local real estate market wasn’t booming enough for some! 😂💼
