Brussels – The EU and Singapore signed an agreement to collaborate on AI safety, innovation, and responsible development through shared knowledge and standards.
The European Commission Services and Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information have inscribed an Administrative Arrangement to commemorate the beginning of the collaboration between the EU’s artificial intelligence (AI) Office and Singapore’s AI Safety Institute.
How will the EU-Singapore AI partnership impact global safety?
As reported by the EU Commission, this Arrangement is a significant step forward in strengthening their collaboration in promoting the innovation, development and responsible service of safe, trustworthy and human-centric AI.
In her remarks, Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for Europe Fit for the Digital Age, stated: “The safety of AI models employed by people around the world is crucial. We have a common purpose to ensure technology works for us and is in line with our values. Today’s agreement underscores that when we share knowledge we can learn from each other. This allows us to support the established digital collaboration. With safety in mind, innovation can happen with minimal jeopardy and advance in understanding this particularly fascinating yet challenging technology. I look forward to seeing the results of the cooperation between our AI office and the Singapore AI Safety Institute.”
Moreover, the two administrations, like-minded allies, agreed to manage the safety of general-purpose AI models via information exchanges and best practices, joint testing and evaluations, development of instruments and benchmarks, standardisation actions, as well as research on how to promote safe and trustworthy AI.
Additionally, the two partners decided to exchange thoughts on trends and future technological developments in the field of AI, with further areas of cooperation remaining an option. The Administrative Arrangement signed forms an important deliverable of the EU-Singapore Digital Partnership signed in 2023.
